Lincoln County District Court Jury Duty Info

While jury duty is one of the privileges that come with living in a democracy, we recognize that it can also be an inconvenience. Because of that, we have structured our jury system in such a way that it is designed to inconvenience prospective jurors as little as possible. Lincoln County District Court operates under what is called the “One Day – One Trial” system. This means that once you have personally appeared for jury duty whether or not you are ultimately selected to serve on the jury chosen for that particular trial, you will not be called again for jury duty during the remainder of the jury term.

All citizens 18 years of age or older, who are residents for at least 30 days of the state and of the city, town, or county in which they are called for jury duty, and who are citizens of the United States are eligible for jury service. Effective October 1, 2007, jurors are selected from a combined list provided from the Montana Secretary of State of registered voters, licensed drivers, and holders of Montana ID cards.

Appearing for Jury Duty

Jurors are initially called to service by a letter of notification and a request to complete and sign a juror questionnaire.  When you are needed to serve on a specific trial, you will receive by mail a jury summons notifying you of the date, time, and length of the trial.  We are able to notify jurors as to the status of the pending trial by a phone messaging system.

When personally appearing for jury duty, you will need to sign in at the Clerk of District Court’s office located on the top floor of the Courthouse.

Jurors’ Fees

Lincoln County District Court jurors are paid $12.00 for appearing for jury selection, and the selected jury panel will be paid $25.00 per day while serving.
Jurors will also be paid round trip mileage for traveling from their home to the Lincoln County courthouse located in Libby. As of January 1, 2017 the mileage rate is $.545 per mile.
